6 ways to improve your team’s performance in 2016
Welcome back and best wishes for a happy, healthy and fulfilling 2016.
Wondering how to get the best from your people this year? Before you and your team get caught up in the daily whirl, it’s worth taking some time out to consider some simple but effective strategies for lifting team performance. The actions you take now could make a significant difference to you, your team and the performance of your business in 2016.
To get you started, here are my tips for improving your team’s performance in 2016:
- Set some stretch goals.
Get the team together and discuss what’s ahead this year. Ask what goals would really make a difference to them, the business and customers, then choose a few awesome goals, create an action plan and go for it!
- Do some training.
If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got. So, a key area of opportunity is the development of your people. What areas of the business could do with a refresh or update in skills? What activity would bring new ideas into your business?
- Support a worthy cause.
It’s not all about work. People want to know they are doing something good in the world too. What team activity could you all be involved in that could help others less fortunate and help build a team spirit amongst your people?
- Give regular feedback.
It’s a common complaint from people that they simply don’t get enough feedback. Think about how can you build regular, informal feedback into your day by practicing your MBWA (Management By Wandering Around) skills. Make time each day to do the rounds and give feedback to someone who’s doing something great.
- Measure and report on progress.
A sense of progress is one of the greatest motivators. Show your team it’s all worthwhile by helping them see the progress they’re making on their goals this year. Try a monthly review or quarterly update to keep them in the loop on business and team results.
- Get the right people on the bus.
It’s tough, but decisions around ensuring you’ve got the right people on your team have to be faced. If someone’s not working out, now is the time to deal with it in the right way. Bringing the right people on to your team takes time, but it also makes an amazing difference to performance and productivity.
Of course, there are many ways to get the best out of your team. What are you doing to make a difference this year?
Wishing you and your team all the very best for a happy, healthy and fulfilling 2016.
